An emergency fund is a rainy day fund, an umbrella. It is for those unexpected events in life: a job loss, an unexpected pregnancy, a car transmission going out, and so on.  We recommend starting with $1,000 and then build to a 3-6 months of your personal expenses.

Get on a written game plan. John Maxwell says, “A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.”  Take some envelopes, write the budget categories on the envelopes, and use only the allotted money to purchase specific things.  When an envelope is empty, don’t buy anything else in that budget category.  When you use cash you feel it.  When you use your credit card studies have shown that you are liable to spend 12-18% more.

The answer is NO!!

Using a credit card as your emergency fund can backfire.  You could end up using it for non-emergencies and taking on too much debt.  You may incur high interest charges and your line of credit can get reduced or canceled at any time.

We recommend to not even have a credit card.  Using cash or your debit card will keep you on track with your money so if you don’t have the money to buy something then you can’t purchase it.  Investing your money will gain interest and you’re on your way to retiring with dignity instead of having so much debt that you can’t even retire.
